What learners practise
Theory, hands-on practice and assessment
Every course mixes theory with plenty of time on the practical skills care staff use every shift. The trainer assesses each learner before they leave.
- Back care and how work-related injuries happen
- The law and your responsibilities as an employee
- Risk assessment before every move
- Safe moving of loads and of people
- Controversial techniques and why to avoid them
- Sitting, standing, walking, bed mobility and hoisting
Training your whole team
We run Manual Handling for care homes, domiciliary care agencies, supported living and NHS teams. Bring staff to our Cardiff training hub, or we come to you with the equipment so your team trains with the beds and hoists they use every day.
Block bookings are discounted, and certificates go to your organisation promptly after the course.

Manual Handling questions
What is the All Wales Manual Handling Passport?
It is the national framework for manual handling training in health and social care in Wales. It sets out what staff should learn and be assessed on, so training is consistent and recognised by employers across Wales.
Which course do I need?
New staff, or anyone without a current passport, normally take the 2-day course. The 1-day course suits staff who need theory and practical in one day. If you already hold the passport, the half-day practical and refresher course keeps your skills and certificate current.
How often should staff refresh their training?
Most employers in Wales ask for a practical refresher every year. Check your own organisation's policy, and talk to us about a rolling plan for your team.
Can you train at our premises?
Yes. We can bring the equipment and train at your care home or service anywhere in Wales, which lets staff practise with the beds, hoists and spaces they use every day.
Who delivers the training?
Courses are delivered by IOSH-qualified manual handling trainers led by Wayne Thompson, who specialises in the All Wales Manual Handling Passport.
